The distinction between the Belait (Middle Miocene) and Lambir Formations (Middle Miocene) has been a topic of debate for several decades. There are varieties of interpretations exist for the geology of the Marudi area particularly involving the two formations. This is generally due to the similarities between both formations in lithology.
