Abstract

In this research, an experimental investigation of the tool wear, surface roughness and chip formation with MQL application during turning was carried out. The MQL setup that is cost-effective, portable and able to function well on both turning and milling machines was developed for this project. The main principle of this design is the usage of a paint spray gun, which is able to provide a fine mist of oil-air mixture easily. The turning process was done on Aluminium Alloy 6061 with varying depth of cut, cutting speed and cutting environment. Results show that MQL provided better machining performance due to reduced cutting zone temperatures and more favourable chip-tool and tool-workpiece interactions.
