Position Details

Academic, Full Time (Contract)

Location: Miri, Sarawak

The Academic Skills Advisor provides support and advisory activities to students in the development of academic language and learning skills. The role focusses on developing and delivering programs to Curtin students for individuals and groups of students.

Your key responsibilities:

·         Design, implement, and deliver language support modules/programs/services in an effective, efficient and sustainable way to develop students’ academic language and     learning skills.

·         Develop and evaluate online and print resources to enable on- and off-campus students to advance their academic language and learning skills.

·         Provide individual student consultations, and collaborate with academics and other student support staff, to develop intervention strategies for the retention and success   of students (at-risk students, those addressing academic integrity, etc.).

·         Provide student briefings on Academic integrity, and support Academic Integrity cases where needed.

·         Prepare, promote and disseminate learning support module calendars and book venues.

·         Administer surveys for student satisfaction of learning support modules.

·         Update Post Entry Language Assessment (PELA) records and act as focal point for the faculties’ language literacy programmes (SELL and SUCCESS).

·         Contact and invite students to act as Peer-to-Peer (P2P) facilitators, and coordinate and facilitate the P2P programme.

·         Coordinate and facilitate any other learning support programmes.

·         Develop and maintain strong partnerships with Curtin’s academic staff and other student support staff, including Faculty English Language Development (FELD)   coordinators.

·         Collect and analyse data relating to the programs.

·         Organize other relevant projects, programmes or events conducted by the Office of Learning and Teaching (OLT).

·         Contribute to the continuous improvement of the programs, as well as undertaking appropriate scholarly activity that will inform innovative practice.

 

Selection Criteria:

·         Minimum, a Masters degree in TESL/TESOL with considerable relevant experience; or an equivalent combination of relevant experience and/or education/training.  A PhD          degree in a relevant area is desirable.

·         Recent teaching or instructional experience including a demonstrated ability to relate well to, engage with, and engender confidence in students from diverse backgrounds    to achieve learning outcomes, particularly in English Language support. 

·         A sound understanding of the issues related to and demonstrated skills in the development of learning competencies necessary for students to succeed in university   studies.

·         Demonstrated capacity to engage in collaborative practice, contribute to a collegial environment and coordinate work with others to achieve quality outcomes.

·         Highly developed interpersonal and communication skills, including excellent writing and presentation skills.

·         Demonstrated ability to embrace cultural change and changes in professional practice.

·         Proven ability to independently prioritise work, meet deadlines and produce high quality outcomes in situations which may require negotiated solutions between diverse     organisational areas.

·         Strong technology skills to support a high quality learning experience for students and to operate efficiently as part of a team with the capacity to learn and utilise new   online technologies as appropriate.

·         Experience working in higher education and an understanding of the broader issues relating to teaching and learning in the tertiary context, including teaching and     learning in an online environment is desirable.
