Position Details

Location: Curtin University Malaysia Campus, Miri Sarawak
Salary range: RM 122,000 – RM 168,000 per annum
Your new role
We invite applications for the role of Director of Research Innovation & Commercialisation Centre.
This position is responsible for securing attractive, long-term returns from the commercialisation of Curtin’s intellectual property. The primary function of this position is to identify, assess and curate prospective projects, inspired by industry needs, that can deliver meaningful commercial outcomes through the translation of research outcomes to practical application in commercial environments. The incumbent is also jointly responsible, with the Business Development Manager and the Dean of Research & Development, for the success of the Research Innovation and Commercialisation Centre (RICC). The position holds significant authority within the team and the incumbent is expected to demonstrate significant leadership.
Key Responsibilities
- Identify and recruit prospective research projects under the RICC commercialisation process.
- Coach researchers and industry partners on the development of work plans and project submissions in line with the evolving RICC process.
- Lead a team to identify University intellectual property with commercial merit and undertake assessments of the commercial viability of promising technologies.
- Make recommendations to the Curtin Malaysia Research Innovation and Commercialisation (CMRIC) Committee on commercialisation strategies for research outcomes, including investment, licensing, patenting, and formation of spin‐out companies.
- Directly, or through third parties, prepare business plans and/or information memoranda for technologies to be commercialised.
- Negotiate appropriate commercial arrangements with interested parties, including collaborative research contracts, license agreements, assignment agreements, shareholder and subscription agreements and equity positions in spin‐out companies.
- Promote awareness within the University of the value of commercialising intellectual property.
- Investigate innovative mechanisms to enable the commercialisation of university intellectual property, including funding, particularly at the pre‐seed stage.
- Facilitate University‐wide training and education on IP policy and commercialisation process.
- Establish, develop, and foster key stakeholder relationships in the business and research communities.
- Remain abreast of national and international issues relevant to commercialisation within the industry and the higher education sector.
About you
- Possess an MBA or other relevant postgraduate qualification and extensive relevant experience, or extensive and proven technology commercialisation experience.
- Significant experience in commercialisation processes and practice.
- Demonstrated understanding of the entrepreneurship ecosystem.
- Demonstrated high level planning, management and leadership skills with the ability to develop and curate a portfolio of programs.
- High level interpersonal, strong consultation, influencing and negotiation skills with a proven ability to build relationships and communicate effectively with internal and external stakeholders.
- Demonstrated understanding of the education system with established networks and connections.
- Track record of commercialising one or more technologies.
- Experience in managing an early‐stage venture.
- Demonstrated experience in facilitating group workshops/training and high-level of comfort with public speaking and event hosting.
- Demonstrated ability to work collaboratively and productively within a team.
- Sound understanding and working knowledge of intellectual property protection.
- Demonstrated capacity to manage and motivate small teams of multi‐disciplined professionals.
